Variétés
L'Ami des lois, ou Mémorial politique et littéraire, Paris 14 march 1800, p. 3.
1 volume available
In the 'Variétés' column the paper notes that Paris talks a great deal about the 'jeune invisible', the game of a skilled physicien who pays little heed to the public's conjectures; while waiting for that secret to be revealed, it offers readers another puzzle: the automaton that plays chess and draughts, to be seen every day in rue des Poulies, opposite the Louvre colonnade. The paper claims to have discovered the 'tour de Jarnac' (a hidden operator), promises to reveal it within a few days and invites readers to send in their own observations.
