Le Suprême Bon Ton (Caricatures Parisiennes), n. 16
N. 16, Martinet, Paris 1800.
1 volume available
Hand-coloured etched caricature from the series Caricatures Parisiennes - Le Suprême Bon Ton, no. 16, published in Paris by Martinet, rue du Coq Saint-Honoré. It satirises the fashionable deep cylindrical bonnets called "invisibles", which hid the face completely: in the foreground a dandy puts his head into the bonnet of a seated lady to kiss her, on the right another couple embraces with the man's head inside the woman's cage-like bonnet, in the background two ladies wearing the same headgear look at each other through eyeglasses. The print shows how the word "invisible" entered the language of Parisian fashion, in the wake of the popularity of the femme invisible. Full transcription and Italian translation.
