Our wits, probably. But I opt for a better interpretation: maybe he was saying that our wits could make magical things sharper. This is a short film by me about the concept of “sharpened magic” (embedded English subtitles available): Relegating magic to a childish form of entertainment is a way to avoid to confront its sharper implications.
